Rich Froning Still Dominates as an Individual

-

Did Rich Froning Win the Mayhem Classic? More on CrossFit Vs. NSCA with Russ Greene, and an 80-year old CrossFit grandfather with a hero workout.

Good morning and welcome to the WODDITY podcast for news about CrossFit. We are a daily podcast, Monday through Friday, doing CrossFit news in five minutes or less.

My name is Ben Garves and today is Tuesday, the 28th of January, 2020. First of all, thank you to everyone who reached out with condolences about my cousin. I hope you were able to start a conversation with your friends and family about depression and suicide. It means his death was not for nothing. Let’s get back to the news.

Strength in Depth UK Results

Many of us were fortunate enough to watch the free live stream of the CrossFit Strength in Depth Sanctional this weekend. The end result of the London-based event was another notch in the belt of Mat Fraser. On the women’s side, Laura Horvath reminded us why she won the 2017 Rookie of the Year award. With so many athletes having already qualified for the 2020 CrossFit Games through other means, the invites from the Sanctional went to Kelsey Kiel and David Shorunke. As one would expect, Rich Froning’s CrossFit Mayhem Freedom team dominated in the team division. Rich, Scott Panchik, Chyna Cho, and Tasia Percevecz are headed right back to the CrossFit Games. Where they belong.

Digging Deeper on CrossFit Vs. NSCA

Two weeks ago I closed the podcast by reading some of the important comments from Chairman and Founder of CrossFit Greg Glassman’s statement on the progression of CrossFit’s lawsuits with the NSCA. If you want to hear more about the subject, I should share that Tommy Marquez and Sean Woodland recorded a fantastic episode on it for their Talking Elite Fitness podcast. Their guest was Russ Greene, the former Director of Government Relations and Research for CrossFit. Russ talked through all of the nitty gritty and background stories, breaks down the situation to its core, and provides some insight into the history of the legal battle. I’ve put a link to it in my show notes and at WODDITY.com.

The Real Winner of the Mayhem Classic Was Rich Froning

In the wake of Rich Froning’s CrossFit Mayhem Classic Sanctional last weekend, BarBend sat down with the numbers and cranked out an interesting finding: Rich Froning may have won the Sanctional if he had competed as an individual. Bear with us on this: as a part of his “Good Dudes” exhibitions between events, Froning completed four of the seven events the competitors did. His times would have beat Samuel Cournoyer in event three and Connor Duddy in event four. Froning would have then lost to Dylan Martin in event five by only one second, and come in only 17 seconds behind Tola Morakinyo in event seven. Fill in the blanks for the missing events and factor in that Froning gets a little competitive when he’s beside competitors, and it’s a safe argument that he could’ve won the Mayhem Classic. But also remember – he chose the workouts and has probably completed them all multiple times.

Jacinto Bonilla on CrossFit at 80 Years Old

Here’s your motivation for the day. The week. The month, really. If you haven’t heard about Jacinto Bonilla, now’s the time for you to learn. Bonilla is an 80-year old grandfather living in New York and an avid CrossFitter. He took a hiatus to overcome prostate cancer, but is still doing his thing eight decades into his life. The hero workout Jacinto Storm was inspired by him and gains one rep for every year he stays active. If you head to the show notes or WODDITY.com, I have links to a cool video profile and an in-depth article.

And that’s it for news about CrossFit for Tuesday, January 28th. Thanks for listening. Please be sure to rate, review, subscribe, and share. For WODDITY, I’m Ben Garves. We’ll chat tomorrow.
