ESPN had Women + Sports summit yesterday, featuring a number of prominent female leaders in sports and fitness. In attendance were three athletes who are fans of CrossFit methodology: two-time fittest woman on earth Katrin Davidsdottir, WWE Raw women’s champion Becky Lynch, and L1 coach Noor Dajani. Noor is a member of the U.S. Department of State and espnW’s Global Sports Mentoring Program’s class of 2019.

Reykjavik Sanctional’s YouTube Series

The Reykjavik CrossFit Championship has been publishing YouTube episodes documenting their event’s happenings in 2019. One of the coolest events of last season will be back for the 2020 season when the Sanctional returns in April. You can watch the first two episodes of their series on their YouTube channel. I have the link for you.

INOV-8 is Back

Michael Price, the Chief Operating Officer at Inov-8, sat down for a Q&A session with SGB Media to talk about the growth of the company. While the UK shoe company’s focus in recent years has been on running, they had been adopted by CrossFit athletes as early as 2010 as some of the go-to shoes for elite fitness. In 2019, Inov-8 is back in our competitive landscape, having signed Dani Speegle, Scott Panchik, and Jared Enderton. It’s worth a read, if you’re curious about how the company is growing, what they’re focusing on, and their new graphene-rubber technology. Nerd. The link is in my show notes at WODDITY.com.

20.3 Workout Predictions

Dave Castro is getting into a rhythm this Open season, and I appreciate the predictability. Each week he posts his…I guess we can call them “clues” to Instagram around Tuesday or Wednesday. On Thursday or Friday, after the announcement, he posts a picture of his original note about the workout, usually scratched on a napkin or something similar. Then, on Mondays, he follows up with a video recorded after completing the workout, talking about why he picked it. This week, something ominous: with sweat dripping off his face from 20.2, he closes his video with the note, “next week’s gunna suck.”

I can’t wait for him to post a picture of a refrigerator, a hippo, a xylophone, a coffee grinder, or whatever our clue is this week. Castro gets a bad rap, but he’s one of the smartest and most genuine people I’ve met.

20.3 Announcement Winner Predictions

Morning Chalk Up has posted their weekly predictions for the upcoming CrossFit Open live stream. Despite their best attempts, their best staff score is sitting right at 50-50. Right now Kristin Holte and Rebecka Vitesson are the top predictions for the Norwegian CrossFit Championship announcement, although I would take Matilde Garnes in the second matchup based on her current Open standing. As for the Down Under CrossFit Championship announcement, James Newbury earned one vote and Madeline Sturt earned two. I’ll throw my hat in the ring for Newbury, who had one heck of a year in 2019. Check the show notes for a link to Morning Chalk Up’s article if you want to read more in-depth.

20.3 Live Announcement

I say it in every episode, but I promise I’ll only say it two more times. This week. I’m hosting live commentary of the 20.3 CrossFit Open workout announcement on Thursday. I’ve put a link to the live stream in my show notes. My goal is to provide these to you so you know you have to go one place for the stream and it’ll always be there waiting for you, on time. Thursday, 4:30 PM Pacific, you can tune in to see both the Norwegian CrossFit Championship and Australian CrossFit Championship announcements. Norway will also be featuring WODDITY’s athlete introduction videos for Nicolay Billaudel and Kristin Holte this week, along with some CrossFit Open analysis. A huge thanks to them for bringing us in. When you go to our YouTube channel, click the subscribe button and the accompanying bell to get alerts whenever I start a live stream for the CrossFit Open, it’ll make sure you don’t miss a thing.

Mcleod, Helgadottir Join Filthy 150

The CrossFit Filthy 150 is the first Sanctional event of the 2020 season, and it starts just shortly after the end of the CrossFit Open in a few weeks. They’ve started to announce athletes who have RSVPd to their event, posting confirmations for Thuri Helgadottir and Matt Mcleod this week, joining Jonne Koski, Sam Briggs, James Newbury, Kristin Holte, and Dan Bailey. The top of their online qualifier leaderboard includes Meg Reardon, Kelsey Kiel, Steph Chung, Cheryl Nasso, Jacob Heppner, Zack George, and Tim Paulson. I would expect a bunch of additional announcements to be coming soon.

Astronaut Does CrossFit in Space

Okay, I’m going to close with the coolest story. BarBend published an article documenting their sit down with NASA astronaut and US Air Force Colonel Mike Hopkins on how he brought CrossFit methodology to space with him. While spending 166 days on the International Space Station, Hopkins found all sorts of creative ways to do workouts. Check out the link to the video in my show notes at WODDITY.com for the Colonel doing the infamous Murph workout in space.

And that’s it for news about CrossFit on Tuesday, October 22nd. Thanks for listening. Be sure to rate, review, and subscribe. It’s the best way to give back to the show, because it helps more people find us. I’m Ben Garves.
