Fragkou, Trombetta, 5 Others Fail CrossFit Drug Tests

-

Seven athletes, including 9th-place finisher Anna Fragkou, have received sanctions from CrossFit for drug-related infractions. This list also includes Katie Trombetta, who self-reported her failed test via Instagram earlier this week.

The full list is:

Anna Fragkou

Fragkou had a breakout year in 2019, qualifying for the CrossFit Games with National Champion status for Greece. She participated in two Sanctional events, taking 19th at the Dubai CrossFit Championship and 3rd at the Reykjavik CrossFit Championship. She would eventually outperform her 714th-place CrossFit Open ranking to come in 9th in the world at the 2019 CrossFit Games.

Anna Fragkou’s sanctions come from a positive test for a metabolite of oral turinabol on August 2nd at the CrossFit Games. She has received a four-year suspension.

Katie Trombetta

Katie “KT” Trombetta took to Instagram to notify the world of her positive drug test earlier this week. She wrote that her positive drug test for metabolites of GW1516 and ostarine was due to tainted supplements, and that she would not be returning to CrossFit competition at the end of her four-year suspension.

Franky Wood

Wood has unsuccessfully appealed his positive drug test, according to CrossFit’s press release. He tested positive for two substances:

  • A metabolite of tamoxifen
  • Intact human chorionic gonadotropin

With the failed appeal, Wood has been suspended for four years.

Achilleas Pantazis

Achilleas was ranked 126th in the world after the 2019 CrossFit Games. He tested positive for GW1516 sulfoxide and GW1516 sulfone. After a successful appeal for contaminated supplements, Pantazis’ suspension was lessened to two years.

Hylie Thompson

Thompson also tested positive for GW1516 sulfoxide and GW1516 sulfone. Her appeal for contaminated supplements was unsuccessful and she has been suspended for four years. Hylie is a Masters athlete in the 55-59 division who placed fourth in the world in 2019.

Mauro Acevedo and Juan Sforzini

Acevedo and Sforzini both tested positive for substances during the FitLand Fitness Festival in August of 2019. CrossFit has reviewed the test from FitLand and is upholding those test results with corresponding sanctions, as the failed tests also violate CrossFit’s drug policies.

Additional Details

  • We have confirmed CrossFit is offering additional time for Katie Trombetta to provide details about her failed drug test after they were unable to contact her for three weeks after initial notification.
  • Pantazis’ appeals process followed a similar appeal from Kelli Holm. He was able to prove a tainted preworkout supplement for a similar reduced sentence.
