Media Podcast 2020 CrossFit Open, Filthy 150, and 9/11 Memorial WOD

2020 CrossFit Open, Filthy 150, and 9/11 Memorial WOD

-

Instead of taking a moment of silence for 9/11, I thought I’d tell you about one of the more famous September 11th memorial WOD workout schemes, and a video you should watch.

For the workout: the idea is that you sandwich nine movements of eleven reps between a cash-in and cash-out of 2001-meter runs. That gives you the nine, the eleven, and the year 2001.

Be sure to take a moment during the workout to consider the sacrifice of those first responders on-site at the World Trade Center. They were subjected to toxic dust and many now have life-long chronic lung problems, lung cancer, or have died from those conditions.

In July, a bipartisan bill designed to provide basic healthcare for these first responders and their families was passed and signed into law, but ran into many unnecessary hurdles along the way. If you find yourself wanting more after the workout, watch this painful but moving speech from former Daily Show host Jon Stewart. John was instrumental in getting the bill passed, using his star power to get first responders into prominent media outlets to talk about the cause. The link is in my show notes.

It is not a wild and exciting news day in the land of CrossFit, so I thought I’d start into the 2020 CrossFit Games season and paint a picture of how it’s going to start.

The season starts with the 2020 CrossFit Open, this coming October. The first workout will be announced October 10th. I believe it will follow the same system as last year, where gyms and Sanctional events around the globe will host and live stream the announcements in multiple languages starting at 5 PM, Pacific. Workouts will be announced Thursdays and results will be due the following Monday.

The CrossFit Open will span five workouts, from October 10th through November eleventh. We did a 2020 CrossFit Open schedule write-up on WODDITY, so find that link in the show notes or search WODDITY for the 2020 CrossFit Open.

Eleven days after the close of the CrossFit Open will be the first Sanctional event of the 2020 CrossFit Games season. That will be the Filthy 150, running November 22nd through the 24th. It’ll be about 45 minutes southwest of Dublin, Ireland.

The venue has moved to Punchestown Racecouse, which first opened in 1875. It’s a huge property, spanning 450 acres of Irish countryside. CrossFit’s Filthy 150 is using the new International Online Qualifier as an athlete’s method to earn an invite. At the time of writing this, male leaders include Jean-Simon Roy-Lemaire and Jacob Heppner. Female leaders are Alanna Fisk and Kendall Vincelette.

The event was started in 2013 as a local affiliate competition, hosting six affiliates, 50 athletes, and about 100 spectators. By 2018, it had expanded to over 1200 athletes, 100 affiliates, and 3,000 spectators and took over three entire airport hangers. You can sign up for updates about spectator tickets at filthy150.com/spectate.

And that’s it for news about CrossFit on Wednesday, September 11th.

If you didn’t catch it yesterday, my new YouTube series is now live. It’s called Road Warrior Fitness and my dog and I doing epic workouts in epic places. Episode one puts a CrossFitter into an endurance environment, climbing Gray’s Peak in Colorado. You can follow and watch all of my adventures by searching YouTube for WODDITY or Ben Garves.
