Whenever I talk about CrossFit to someone who is unfamiliar with it, I hear the same five words: “I could never do that”.
Depending on the day, my response to this will vary between simple encouragement (“sure you could!”) to a full-blown on-my-soapbox diatribe (“of course you can and here are the 100 reasons why…”)
While awareness of what we do in CrossFit has improved over the last few years, there’s still a lot of misinformation and misunderstanding.
CrossFit originated as an underground movement of garage gladiators who were competing. That isn’t what CrossFit is today, however. You can see how much it has changed over the past few years simply by scrolling the main site’s social media sites, where you’re more likely to see inspiring stories of personal struggle and achievement from regular people in every age group than rippling bodies in booty shorts.
This is what we see every single day at Alchemy – regular people making extraordinary improvements in their health and fitness. Our membership is made up of real people – teachers, doctors and mechanics – and at every level of fitness. These are people who may have believed “they couldn’t do it” but who pushed past their self-doubt, and in doing so, discovered that a) CrossFit is not intimidating and b) that they are capable of more than they imagined.
At a CrossFit gym (or “box”) you WILL be asked to:
• Lift weights
• Push yourself in shorter, more intense workouts
• Learn new skills
You will NOT be asked to:
• Lift weights you can’t lift
• Push yourself mindlessly
• Perform movements you aren’t ready to do properly
Out of shape? Older? Overweight? Dealing with injury? You’re welcome in a CrossFit class, which aims to be accessible to everybody in every state of fitness. When done right, a CrossFit class should feel like a group fitness class that’s tailored to individual needs. But don’t just take my word for it. So, while there are still rippling bodies in CrossFit, they stand shoulder to shoulder with a greater population of people that look just like your neighbours and friends. And while you still may think ‘I could never do that,’ I am telling you based on our experiences with hundreds of people just like you that you can.
